Voices Faintly Heard film screening – plus music and Q&A w/Chris Haddox and Mary Linscheid

Voices Faintly Heard is a 37-minute film by Chris Haddox and Rebecca Branson Jones that explores Haddox’s years-long research into the overlooked folk music traditions of southern West Virginia’s coalfields, a region often defined solely by its extractive industries. Through rare archival recordings, historical research, and contemporary performances, the film brings forward the stories of musicians whose voices were captured in the early 20th century but whose lives remain largely unknown.

By reconnecting songs to the lives, landscapes, and communities that shaped them, Voices Faintly Heard reveals folk music as a living record of cultural resilience in Appalachia’s coalfield counties.

Music program to follow the film:

Following the film, Chris Haddox (of Chris Haddox Music) and Mary Linscheid (of The Wild Shoats and The Weevils) will perform a set of songs and tunes from the southern coalfield counties of Logan, Mingo, and Lincoln–selections whose roots are in the ballads and tunes that were brought to the southern Appalachians by the earliest of Anglo settlers from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
